CAHHH Concert Committee Presents
Sunday, June 8
3:00 - 5:00 p.m. on the Lodge Stage
Folk-duo Pete and Maura Kennedy earned multiple standing ovations during last year's performance. Join us as The Kennedys perform again on the Heritage Harbour stage.
THE KENNEDYS. Even the name evokes a certain vibe, harkening back to that odd duality of the 60’s – the glittering fantasyland of Camelot versus gutsy civil rights anthems that fueled policy-changing demonstrations. It might be stretching the point, but the tunes of husband and wife folk-duo Pete and Maura Kennedy seem to embrace both the inestimable grace and the undeniable passion of that tumultuous era where we lost a president and tore at a long existing social fabric.
Most of us can still sing Peter, Paul and Mary tunes (in three-part-harmony), and growl every Bob Dylan epic. Our DNA clicked with that music. We grew into it – and grew up with it. Not surprising, these are but two of The Kennedys’ big influences. Add in some Buddy Holly, a little classic country and a whole lot of Nanci Griffith, and the tools for classic songcraft land in your lap.
Headwinds, the title track on their latest CD release is lyrically direct and immediately relatable:
“The restless breeze made the leaving seem so easy But headwinds make it hard to get back home.”
Pete lays down a plaintive lap steel track to the acoustic and electric strum, while Maura’s vocals journey through an evocative melody that you’ll be humming on the way back home. On first hearing, it fits the tried-and-true mold of relationship songs, but on a deeper level, it’s about becoming lost, redirecting, correcting a course that’s gotten too far from home base. It’s a metaphor for realizing when one is on the brink of disaster and thinking hard about the consequences of not making bold changes.
Last year performing on Heritage Harbour’s stage, they earned multiple standing ovations with their performance. The Kennedys’ renditions of traditional folk songs and their own thoughtful compositions absolutely beguiled us. Please join us as they do so again.

The annual Civic Association Food Drive is near! On Monday, June 9, rain or shine, we will be collecting nonperishable food for the Anne Arundel County Food Bank. Starting at 10:00 a.m. on Monday June 9, please leave your nonperishable food items at the curb or at the end of your driveway.
PLEASE CHECK EXPIRATION DATES.
We will be collecting, sorting and boxing the food in the parking lot of the Heritage Harbour Lodge. We have been averaging over five tons of food and over $10,000 in donations. The need for food is great, as is our need for helpers to pack and sort.
We also need help unloading food donations from cars and moving packed boxes a short distance. If you can help, please contact Deedee at 410-757-0355. If you have volunteered in the past you will be contacted in May.
If you wish to donate please make your checks out to Anne Arundel County Food Bank and send to Deedee Mahaffay, 947 Tidewater Grove Court. Many Food Drives are in the fall or around the holidays. This time of year, the County Food Bank is running low on food, yet their need during the summer is great. Please help! We look forward to a sunny day and a record breaking Food Drive.

Parking in Heritage Harbour Streets is an issue that the Heritage Harbour Community Association (HHCA) and the Civic Association of Heritage Harbour Homeowners (CAHHH) received several very helpful responses from our residents. One of the most serious concerns was about parking that blocks access on our streets, especially for emergency response vehicles.
We contacted officers of the West Annapolis and Riva Voluntary Fire Departments about this problem. They shared that they need at least 10 feet between parked vehicles on opposite sides of a street and at least 15 feet from any fire hydrant. The Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works representative agreed that sharing this critical information at Heritage Harbour would be “a huge victory for you and your community.”
This article emphasizes the importance that Heritage Harbour residents and visitors are aware of the importance of providing room for emergency vehicles to easily get to all residences in Heritage Harbour.
Emergency vehicles need a clearance of at least 10 feet on all streets and 15 feet access to fire hydrants:
We should never park vehicles on both sides of the street leaving less than 10 feet of clearance between them. (Distance of Two 5-foot people with arms outstretched) We should never park within 15 feet of any fire hydrant. (It is Illegal) Our Heritage Harbour community will continue to discuss ways to work together on keeping our streets safe.

Thanks to all who attended our annual meeting on November 11. Our keynote speakers, Bob Stevenson and Adam Stevenson, related stories about the Chesapeake Bay’s surviving lighthouses. Bob has been leading tours aboard the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, a National Historic Landmark, since 2007. Bob was joined by his son Adam, who has sailed the bay since childhood and has developed an enthusiasm for the history and importance of America’s lighthouses. We enjoyed hearing about some very familiar lighthouses, like Sandy Point and Thomas Point Shoal.
During the business portion of the meeting, we elected/re-elected by acclamation the following members of our Board of Directors:
George Merchant, President
Julie Weatherly, Vice President
Michael Alin, Treasurer
Ann Marie Kelly, Secretary
We appreciate the hard work of these volunteer residents who commit much time and energy to our community.
On October 12, Joni Morrison and her volunteers did an excellent job of bringing the ever-popular shredding event to Heritage Harbour. Kudos to them for providing this service to our community, and thanks to everyone for your generous donations, which help defray the costs of the shredding truck. Joni has planned spring and fall shredding events for 2025, so watch for details in future Harbour Lights.
We would also like to thank our Concert Coordinator, Mary-Beth Phillips, and her team for bringing outstanding musical performances to Heritage Harbour. On October 13, performers from the Maryland Opera, led by pianist and Artistic Director James Harp, made opera accessible even to novices. On November 10, Daryl Davis and his band got us up on the dance floor with tunes featuring boogie-woogie, R&B and that old time rock ‘n’ roll. Please mark your calendars for a Celtic Christmas on December 8 and Brian Ganz on January 12.
January will also bring the Civic Association’s annual membership drive, organized by our membership chair Jerry Klinken. In our role as an organization separate from the Heritage Harbour Community Association, we deal primarily with matters that are external to Heritage Harbour, such as those involving county, state or federal governments and agencies. Please watch your USPS mail in early January for a letter from the Civic Association.
Wishing all a happy and healthy holiday season!
